How Could Someone As Fit As Bob Harper Have A Heart Attack?

How Could Someone So Fit like Bob Harper Have a Heart Attack?

Medical doctors tend to look at conventional risk factors to heart disease this includes:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Abnormal Cholesterol
  • Stress
  • Overweight

But wait! Bob harper was fit not overweight. He was the epitome of health. He was 51 years old, super-fit and the host of weight loss reality show The Biggest Loser. But he had a heart attack in New York during heart month!!!

Looking healthy is not good enough! Hypertension is a silent  and abnormal cholesterol can happen with people any shape or size.

The Majority of Who have Heart Attacks and Strokes Occur Have Normal Cholesterol

That is why it is important to understand cholesterol. Understand that all cholesterol is not equal. More importantly statin drugs do not protect you from a heart attack.

The Majority of Heart Attacks Occur with Blockages That Are Less Than 50%

So even if Mr. Bob Harper went to the best cardiologist in the world more than likely he would have been given a clean bill of health. Why? He would have done an exercise treadmill test, and this will only show advanced stages of heart disease (80% blockages or more). Doctors would have looked at him and said nothing to worry about.

But heart disease can happen to anyone anytime. The best way I can say it is plaques can be small and they are like a pimple on your face. If the pimple (plaque) is well protected it will not cause any problems. The skin is tough over the plaque. Well if the skin is not tough protecting that pimple (plaque) it can explode. We have all had this before… the puss the blood. Well imagine this inside your artery. This can take a small blockage to a large blockage very quickly.

Why do Majority of Heart Attacks Occur?

Why do the Majority of Heart Attacks and Strokes Occur with Blockages That are Less Than 50%.

Atherosclerosis
I know this sounds a little off what we normally think but our arteries are very unique. They are a muscle not a pipe. Many people think that cholesterol clogs our arteries and we end up with a heart attack or stroke as a result. Just like the pipes that clog our drains. We then call the plumber and they clear our pipes. Because our arteries are a muscle and not a metal pipe, artery blockages can occur with the build up of plaque or cholesterol, but the truth is that when it comes to heart attacks this happens very little of the time.

The majority of heart attack and strokes occur with blockages that are less than 50%.

Imagine you have a pimple on your face. Now imagine this pimple inside your artery blocking your artery lets say only 40%.
There is a skin that grows over this pimple and we have all experienced when a pimple “pops”. Yes it is gross. It pusses and bleed. Well now lets imagine this happening inside an artery. Your artery is flowing well one day with a small blockage and all of a sudden this blockage (like a pimple) breaks off and you end up having a heart attack with NO WARNING SIGN.

What is a Vegetable? Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

Vegetables to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

what is vegetable heart disease

Why are Vegetables Important for Heart Disease?

Why are vegetables important? I keep on talking about how your arteries are a muscle not a pipe. We just cannot go into our arteries and clean them out like a pipe. They have to heal like any muscle in your body. The issue is that you necessarily cannot see the healing or disease process until a heart attack or stroke.

One of the best things to have your arteries heal is to give them the right environment to do so. We all know the difference between something good and bad. Well if you have something bad going on in your arteries vegetables should be the base of support for the way you eat. Trust me they don’t taste bad and more importantly you feel better when you eat better. Vegetables and fruits will provide the essential vitamins, minerals, nutrients and anti-oxidants to prevent and reverse heart disease and more importantly have your arteries reverse the disease process. It does take work so enjoy the rest of the post to understand how much vegetables we require.

What are the best types of Vegetables?

It is best to eat vegetables as they are in season. Vegetables that are green and leafy are going to be my number one recommendation as they will heal the artery walls the best.

Winter:
Mushrooms, onions and leeks, sweet potatoes, turnips and yams

Spring:
Broccoli, cabbage, green beans, lettuce, mushrooms, onions and leeks, peas, rhubarb, and spinach

Summer:
Beets, eggplant, garlic, green beans, lima beans, mushrooms, peas, radishes and tomatoes.

Fall:
Beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, garlic, ginger, parsnips, sweet potatoes, yams (not yam fries) and mushrooms.

What is a serving of Vegetables?

So here I think it is best to provide images of what a serving size is of a vegetable. It is not hard to get up to my recommendation of 10 servings a day. Having a green smoothie or soup allows you to consume a good amount on one sitting ( that is what I do).

servingsize

1 serving of Vegetables: 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables (about the size of a small fist), 1/2 cup of other vegetables or 1/2 cup of fresh pressed vegetable juice.
To be a little more specific: 1/2 cup of raw or cooked vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, mushrooms, onions)
1 large celery stalk. 1 medium sized carrot or 1/2 dozen baby carrots. 1 cup of leafy vegetables (which are my favourite for reversing disease process).

veggies

Since Fruits are important too: 1 medium fruit (medium is defined as the size of a baseball); 1/2 cup chopped, cooked or canned fruit; or 1/2 cup pressed juice.

What if you feel you still cannot get enough Vegetables and Fruits?

Then I recommend supplementing like I do. I am human. I managed to reverse a big GI problem with nutrition and a lot had to do with vegetables. Our food guide talks about 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. Really it should be closer to 10. If you are trying to reverse a disease you should be at least 10. The average person is lucky to get 3.

I have a smoothie for breakfast and this gets me on the right track for the day, but when I add up what I have in a day I am lucky to get to seven or so. Well if you have concerns maintaining a high amount of vegetables in your diet just let me know. Fill the form below or respond to me via email and I will be happy to share what I am doing.

Kyani nitric oxide nitroextreme

Kyani for Heart Disease: Nitroextreme for Increased Nitric Oxide Production.

Heart disease and Stroke are the leaders in hospitalization and death in Canada and in other developed countries. Nitric Oxide is a key to having your cardiovascular system run at its best.  Nitric Oxide is a powerful vasodilator, which means it helps relax and expand blood vessels. Many years ago I read a book called “No More Heart Disease”. It was a great book and opened my eyes to the benefits of Nitric Oxide production in our bodies. That book was written well over a decade ago (at the time of this post). New research has come out to show that L-Arginine and L-Citrulline may not be the best to increase Nitric Oxide (NO) production in the body.

Why don’t I just take Nitric Oxide?

Nitric Oxide cannot be taken directly because it does not last long in our bodies. Our bodies make Nitric Oxide, therefore you want to have supplement to then produce Nitric Oxide.
My number one things to improve Nitric Oxide production is EXERCISE. It is still the best medicine. External Counterpulsation treatment also known as ECP/EECP also stimulates Nitric Oxide Production.

Here are some challenges with L-Arginine/L-Citrulline recommended in the book:

1) In the heart disease/older populations, particularly those that had endothelial (inner lining of the artery) damage/dysfunction,
especially those with vascular sclerosis/dysfunction, an increased dose and maintenance was needed at a higher than normal dosing, i.e.: 15-20g L-Arginine daily to achieve and hold the desired effects. This is also true in those that had elevated asymmetric dimethyl Arginine (ADMA) levels due to the diversion from the Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) pathway of L-Arginine.

2) With increased dosing there was:
a. Diarrhea.
b. blood sugar spikes.
c. activation of the herpes simplex virus in its many variants.
d. increased serum levels of magnesium even though there was none in the product
and the patients were not being supplemented.
e. heart arrhythmias (general populations) – suspected as a result of interstitial and
organ depletion of magnesium required for L-Arginine /L-Citrulline metabolism.

In the event you are wishing to
– Control blood pressure
– Experience the benefits of Increased Nitric Oxide Production
– Improve dilation in your arteries
– Increase Energy
– Improved Blood Flow
– Decrease clotting
– Decreased oxidation of LDL

Then you want to consider exercise, External Counterpulsation and/or supplementing well with a good Nitric Oxide Supplement. Kyani is what we recommend as it is very well documented as to the benefits of Nitric Oxide production.

Kyani’s NitroXtreme proprietary (closely guarded) extracting process highly concentrates the nitrates and nitrites to very high potency then to potential Nitric Oxide conversion adds small amounts of additional ingredients to act as cofactors. These additional ingredients are not intended as nutrients on their own but rather to facilitate Nitric Oxide creation.

I will send you some information along with our
TOP TEN MUST HAVE SUPPLEMENTS FOR PREVENTING HEART DISEASE

There have been several companies that have sold Noni juice combined with other juices to dilute the taste thereby creating a “weak” progenitor of NO. Kyani does exactly the opposite. Kyani extracts the active isolates and then concentrates them creating a highly potent product.

Please feel free to contact our clinic to help you further.

Alternative heart disease treatment

Alternative Heart Disease Treatment

There is a growing number of patients who are living with advanced coronary artery disease, who can experience symptoms of angina. These patients are often times not amenable to cardiac medications, heart stents and/or bypass surgery.

The Heart Fit Clinic now offers External Counterpulsation to patients of Calgary and surrounding areas. External Counterpulsation is an amazing evidence-based therapy to help patients with coronary artery disease, specifically stable coronary artery disease. External Counterpulsation also called, EECP or ECP, is used extensively all over the world for the treatment of coronary artery disease and now Calgarians (Albertans) are extremely fortunate to have the treatment here.

The management of patients with advanced and chronic coronary artery disease is limited. Cardiologists treatment is limited to heart stents or bypass surgery, and if a patient has already undergone this option then they are on optimal medical therapy. Patients continue to be classified as “no option” and are given a prescription to treat their disease. However, is this enough? These “no option” patients now have another option. “We are excited to provide this valuable treatment to the people of Calgary and surrounding areas and give patients another option to treat heart disease” says Diamond Fernandes, director of the Heart Fit Clinic.

New treatment principles are continuing to emerge yet they are not in practice here in Canada. Specifically, Calgarians are limited to contemporary management of coronary artery disease especially when symptoms of angina are present despite optimal medical therapy. These patients present a challenge to cardiologists and now the Heart Fit Clinic is bridging this essential gap in our healthcare system.

External Counterpulsation (EECP, ECP) is safe, painless, non-surgical and non-invasive treatment. There are a multitude of benefits to patients, but more importantly it relieves these symptoms of heart disease. The treatment involves lying comfortably on a special bed and a series of blood pressure cuffs are wrapped around the patient’s legs that sequentially inflate to the patient’s cardiac cycle.
