What Is Glutathione And How Is It Linked To Heart Disease?

There is a lot of talk about glutathione. Glutathione is something your body produces and has been discovered many years ago. Glutathione (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own” ) also known as GSH. A good way to remember it is to “glue your tie one”. Glutathione and heart disease are very much linked.  We know that heart disease is an inflammatory disease and if you have or are at risk of heart disease then you more than likely have low levels of glutathione. Are you taking any vitamins or supplements? Glutathione can be one of the most important supplements you can take.

As Glutathione was featured on Dr. Oz, I thought I would write a little review on really what to do to increase this essential antioxidant in your body. Dr. Oz calls it one of the most powerful antioxidants you haven’t heard of.

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine. Glutathione is a very important antioxidant, probably the most important because it is produced in every cell of your body all the time. It protects our cells from oxidative stress, however, when we get overwhelmed so does its production.

It is very important because as you age and as you have disease come into your life your glutathione levels deplete.

As we know heart disease is a cause of inflammation as a result from oxidative stress on our body. My big oxidative stressors are

  1. Poor nutrition (Increased simple carbohydrates and increased blood sugar)
  2. Smoking and pollution
  3. Lack of Sleep
  4. Stress (anxiety, depressions, & anger)
  5. Overweight
  6. Lack of Activity

Glutathione and heart disease are very much linked. If you have heart disease you probably have low levels of glutathione. Most chronically diseased patients will have glutathione deficiency. The heart muscle required glutathione because there are more mitochondria in the heart muscle than in any other cell in the body.

The good news is that your body can produce and restore its own glutathione levels. Our ability to produce and maintain high level of glutathione is critical to recovering from chronic disease and heart disease.

Glutathione proof
There have been so many medical articles (98,000 to date) on glutathione however it is just starting to poke its head out to the media. For decades scientists have known about glutathione’s vital role in protecting our cells, tissues and organs. Many research studies done by US Government and Pub Med have documented the roles glutathione provides to the body.

As mentioned, Glutathione is recycled in the body – except when our body is loaded with toxins. This results in a lower production of glutathione. Now you, unfortunately cannot readily measure glutathione levels. It is an expensive test and if you are willing to measure it you could most likely get it done at your naturopathic doctor.

Glutathione and Heart Disease

Why is Glutathione Important?

It recycles the other antioxidants. Free radicals float around in our body and it is passed around from Vitamin to Vitamin then finally to glutathione which takes the free radical and basically inactivates it. After this process happens it produces another molecule and the whole action starts again.

The problem occurs when we are bombarded with oxidative stress and toxins. The glutathione depletes and we can no longer protect ourselves and rid toxins.

You can see in the video with Dr. Oz on how he is holding the molecules and how the toxins stick to the glutathione molecule. It is critical for immune function and controlling inflammation such as heart disease.

There is good news. As mentioned you can get your levels checked, but not always necessary. It is important to make sure that you keep your levels optimal by taking a supplement and/or eating foods that will boost levels.

How can you increase Glutathione levels in your body?

Now you just can’t run down to your local pharmacy or go online and get a glutathione supplement. Oral Glutathione is useless as most of it gets broken down in the digestive system and does not reach cells. So it is important to know what you can do to increase glutathione.  Because you naturally produce glutathione in your body, it is best to take a supplement that would increase glutathione production. In addition, I have summarized a good list here from on how you can increase glutathione in your body.

  1. Consume Sulfer Rich foods – garlic, onions and vegetables
  2. Bioactive Whey Protein: Good source of cysteine
  3. Exercise
  4. N-Acetyl Cysteine
  5. Alpha Lipoic Acid
  6. Folate, Vitamin B6 and B12
  7. Selenium
  8. Vitamin C and Vitamin E
  9. Milk Thistle
  10. Cold water tubs

Glutathione Side Effects:

Because glutathione is a naturally produced in your body there are no severe side effects when supplementing with a product to increase glutathione production. Because glutathione producing supplements are ingested by pill there can be some gastro-intestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.

Glutathione Drug Interactions:

If you are taking any medications it is always best to talk to your doctor about supplementation. However, doctors may not be aware of everything so it is best to talk with your pharmacist. As Glutathione is something we produce in your body naturally, there was no studies showing noted of any drug interactions.

FAQ about Glutathione  Injections:

Glutathione injections into the blood stream – generally very expensive.  The Glutathione molecule is very large and cannot get out of the blood stream into the individual cells.  If there is blood disorder or you need to detox something in the blood, then this will likely work well.   Glutathione intravenously was originally given as we did not know how to get it to survive the stomach orally, or what to give a person by mouth to increase the glutathione until recently.   Glutathione works best at the cellular level.  If the intracellular glutathione levels are boosted, you get the most benefit.

Riboceine is a combination of Ribose and Cysteine.  Cysteine is the primary requirement in the body for production of glutathione.  Riboceine can survive the stomach and is absorbed into the blood stream.  The molecule is much smaller that glutathione and can get into the individual cells resulting in increased intracellular glutathione.  I think there is much greater benefit from increasing intracellular glutathione, not boosting blood levels.  Supplements like Riboceine are much less expensive than IV glutathione and it is much easier for most to swallow capsules than have weekly IV doses.  Cysteine by itself is a small molecule and will be absorbed from the blood stream into the cells.  It is used with Tylenol overdoses to augment the glutathione production in the liver to detox the Tylenol.   If the overdose is survived, there is less chance of needing a liver transplant afterwards.  Tylenol in large amounts is very toxic to the liver.

Watch out for just Glutathione Supplements

Glutathione supplements taken by mouth are a waste of money.  Glutathione does not survive the stomach acids and is broken down into useless parts.  There is no benefit. You have to look at the ingredients in the various products.   You also have to be aware of the fact that some of the products you have to take two different bottles of product to get the same ingredients that you get in the the best glutathione enhancing products.  Some have just copied what is in the other products that are available but have not done any research themselves.   They throw the ingredients together and hope it works because that is what everyone else has in their products.

You need ingredients that will survive the stomach, get into the bowels to be absorbed into the blood stream, then taken up by the cells and boost the production of glutathione in the cells.  The best glutathione enhancing products are glutathione “accelerators”.  Look at the ingredients.  There is NO glutathione in any of them.  The ingredients are all things that are required to either boost glutathione production, help augment production or are antioxidants themselves.  They survive the stomach acids and are then available for absorption.

Can Sugar Cause Heart Disease?

Soda has been in the media quite a bit in the last few months. Even to go as far to ban the sales of larger soft drinks in convenience stores in New York.

The fact is there are going to be people who neglect their health and more so if their economic status is lower. It is more expensive to invest in your health than to not and there are reasons that there is a link to sugar and heart disease. Fast food chains and simple carbohydrates are cheaper to consume versus healthy fruits and vegetables. And when it comes to drinking soda soft drinks, it is cheaper to consume sugar soda drinks that it is for a bottle of water.

What is the link Between Sugar and Heart Disease?

Sugar is an addictive element that can lead to diabetes which can lead to heart disease.

New research out of the Europe showed that just one 12-oz daily increment in sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened soft-drink consumption was associated with the development of type 2 diabetes.

sugarThe soda and heart disease link should be more like sugar and heart disease link. Sugar is responsible for the beginning of the inflammatory response which causes our cholesterol in our body to be used up in a negative way.

So even going deeper into this sugar and heart disease link, it should really be poor carbohydrates and heart disease. Carbohydrates when processed in our body turn to sugar and once again simple carbohydrates are cheaper and easier to come by versus healthy nutrition. So it does become an awareness understanding to the average person that sugar is not good. Soda is nothing but sugar which causes a surge of hormones that can eventually lead to heart disease.

As I always say it all starts off with the right mindset to attack the problems of sugar and heart disease. Many people know that things are not good for us but we do them anyway. We also have to look at the addictive properties of sugar. Just like smoking is addictive, so is sugar. And just like so many people eventually giving up smoking, so can the addictive properties of sugar can be given up too.

If you want to change, things will change and we know that there is an important link to sugar and heart disease. We have known this for years and I believe that the direction taken focusing on just cholesterol is wrong. You can always read our post on sugar and cholesterol and understand the real cause of heart disease.

Sugar Versus Cholesterol; What Is The Cause Of Heart Disease?

Sugar

There has been lots of research in the last few years talking about how increased  sugar is the cause of diabetes and heart disease. As a society the media really clouds our judgment, and we think that cholesterol is our enemy.

Dietary Cholesterol is NOT your enemy.

Cholesterol is a vital component and is used for building blocks for cell membranes, maintaining healthy cells, an aid to digestion, and in the manufacture of sexual hormones. So is dietary cholesterol the cause of cardiovascular disease? Well, I will let you formulate this answer.
Over 50% of heart attacks occur with people with normal cholesterol. So is cholesterol the cause of cardiovascular disease? It is inflammation. We have known this for years and sugar and cholesterol have been going head to head for years.
Our focus has been all wrong and I think we are just in the infant stages of changing this. Sugar causes inflammation, cholesterol does not cause inflammation. Let’s explain. When you have an inflammatory response (cut) inside your arteries, cholesterol comes to the rescue and fixes the problem. How does the inflammatory response get worse? Cholesterol gets broken down (oxidized) and gets used up in a negative way that contributes to the build up of plaque.

So Sugar and Cholesterol go head to head.

What is the cause of heart disease? When you eat sugar which comes in many forms it can cause inflammation. When you eat cholesterol it does not cause inflammation. We are bombarded with advertising and marketing and you truly have to take a step back and decide, what is the purpose? Simple economics!
Statin drugs make Billions of dollars!
Food companies make Millions focusing on Lower Cholesterol.
Statin drugs are great because they lower inflammation however can come with some side effects. You can also lower inflammation with exercise and nutrition. So what should we do? What is your enemy sugar or cholesterol? If anything has to advertise to you about the benefits of the food then my opinion is stay away. Nutrition is one of the best ways to lower inflammation in your body and I never see the “natural products” advertise “lower cholesterol”.
